We also fabricate them using CEREC technology, which saves you time and money!
What Are Inlays and Onlays?
Inlays and onlays are considered a conservative alternative to traditional dental crown materials. In other words, the ideal candidate for inlay or onlay work usually has too much damage to be treated with a filling, but enough healthy tooth is remaining to avoid a dental crown. Think of inlays and onlays as partial crowns, allowing us to preserve more of the original tooth structure. The restoration is considered an inlay if it is bonded directly to the center of the occlusal (bite) surface. Conversely, it is considered an onlay if it extends beyond one or more of the cusps. We may recommend an onlay for damage or decay in the tight, hard-to-reach areas between your teeth.
Inlay and Onlay Procedure
Thanks to CEREC technology the inlay and onlay procedure is quicker and easier than ever before. CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics and allows us to fabricate and place your inlay or onlay during a single appointment.
First, Dr. Travis Cochell will prepare the tooth by removing any damaged tooth material. Next, we will use an intraoral camera to take a 3D digital impression of the tooth. This 3D model will be used to help us digitally design your inlay or onlay. Once we are satisfied with the design, this information will be sent to our milling machine. We will choose a ceramic block that best matches the color of your natural teeth. Then, the block is milled into your inlay or onlay in a matter of minutes! Finally, we will check the margins, make any final adjustments, and bond the restoration to your tooth.
Advantages of Inlays and Onlays
There are several advantages to inlays and onlays, some of which include:
• |
Durability. Inlays and onlays are made from ceramics that are extremely stable. Some inlays and onlays have been known to last for several decades.
|
• |
Protective. Inlays and onlays can protect weak areas of a tooth and even strengthen a damaged tooth because they preserve the maximum amount of healthy structure.
|
• |
Aesthetics. Ceramic can be textured and molded to match the existing appearance of your natural tooth. It can also be color matched, making it virtually indistinguishable from your real enamel.
|
• |
Superior Fit. Inlays and onlays do not require a complete reshaping of your enamel, which provides a superior fit, especially for tight space fulfillments. The custom tailored fit makes cleaning and maintenance much easier than other full coverage alternatives.
|
• |
Longevity. Because inlays and onlays preserve the maximum amount of healthy enamel, they extend the life of a damaged tooth. They can even prevent the need for future dental treatment! |
