What are Dental Implants?
A dental implant is a tiny titanium post that serves as a replacement for the root of a tooth. Treatment is broken down into three parts: • |
During the first step, Dr. Gregory Williams will surgically place the implant into your jawbone. A screw is inserted into the post to prevent tissue and other debris from entering. Your gum tissue is then sutured over the implant. For the next three to six months, the implant and your bone will fuse through the process of osseointegration. Osseointegration allows the implant to mimic the relationship between a natural tooth root and your jaw.
|
• |
During the second step, the implant is exposed, and Dr. Williams attaches an extension known as an abutment. The abutment provides additional support and connects the implant to your restoration. In some cases, the abutment and implant can be placed at the same time.
|
• |
During the third step, an impression is used to fabricate your final restoration. Often, this requires the use of a dental laboratory. Dr. Williams will then permanently attach your restoration to the implant. |
Most patients are suitable candidates for dental implants. To qualify for implant treatment, you must have good oral hygiene and a sufficient amount of bone. Patients who have experienced bone deterioration may need to receive a bone graft. Talk with Dr. Williams to see if implant treatment is right for you.
The Advantages of Dental Implants
The advantages of dental implants include: • |
Bone preservation. One of the biggest advantages of dental implants is the preservation of your bone. When you lose a tooth, you lose the physical stimulation your jaw needs to remain healthy. If left untreated, your bone will begin to deteriorate. When an implant is in place, osseointegration will provide the stimulation your jaw needs to prevent deterioration. This allows you to maintain a youthful facial structure.
|
• |
Enhanced appearance. Implant-supported restoration has improved aesthetics. Because the becomes a part of you, your restoration will look and feel like your natural teeth.
|
• |
Enhanced comfort. Other restorations may make it difficult to chew and speak. Patients who rely on dentures have to deal with embarrassing slips and gum irritation. Implant-supported restorations eliminate slips and discomfort.
|
• |
Enhanced durability. Implants are sturdy, secure, and support even the strongest bite pressure. You will be able to eat all your favorite foods with confidence. Many patients find their implants will last a lifetime.
|
• |
Enhanced convenience. Implants can be cleaned and maintained just like your natural teeth. Other restorations may require specialized equipment and frequent adjustments.
|
• |
Enhanced oral health. Other restorations can cause problems for your adjacent teeth. Traditional bridges can lead to decay and structural issues. Because an implant relies on your bone for support, your natural teeth remain unaffected. |
